From the commodity boom in the early 2000s to the current transition to clean energy, countries in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) have undergone profound economic changes. China’s long-term investments in transportation, energy and commodities for renewable energy in the region not only raised new challenges such as debt and environmental sustainability, but also reintroduced existing challenges such as over reliance on commodities. Pendulum swings between left- and right- wing politics have brought these socio-economic issues to the center of national politics. In this state of flux, how will LAC countries carve their own political and economic future? How will they pursue sustainable industrial and developmental policies? What have they learned from dealing with China in the past two decades? What should the U.S. do to recover its diminishing influence in the region?
