Event Description

The Spring 2022 Simulation focuses on grand strategy in the Arctic region simulating strategic interaction among six countries: United States, Russia, China, Denmark, Canada, and Norway. Each participant is assigned to a team representing a country to envision, design, negotiate, and implement strategies across the national instruments of power in support of their national interests. Teams are provided basic scenario background information, but the simulation relies on the respective teams to formulate their own plans as they react to other players’ moves throughout the simulation.

Players need not be experts in the Arctic region nor their assigned country. Players should leverage the varied expertise within their assigned team to creatively and critically design their strategies. Each team will include a graduate advisor who plays as a team member and contributes with international relations expertise. Teams should approach the simulation with the mindset of their assigned country and remain flexible over the notional 40-year duration of the exercise.

The intent of the simulation is for participants to leave the experience with a greater awareness and context for the challenging geopolitical problem solving involved in developing and executing coherent long term strategies. Players develop a sense for international signaling, sense making, cooperation, and competition in a scenario that resembles potential real world futures.

All majors and years are welcome and encouraged to attend. There are no citizenship requirements. CISS has also invited and expects participants from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and ROTC cadets from Rutgers and NJIT.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
