About the Speaker: A native of Simi Valley, CA, LT Joe Tran enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 2006 and served in a variety of billets prior to achieving the rank of Chief Information Systems Technician in 2016. Subsequently, he was selected for direct commissioning under the FY-18 Limited Duty Officer In-Service Procurement Program, where he accepted a commission in 2018. He is a graduate of National University, La Jolla, CA with a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology Management. In 2022, he redesignated from Information Professional (6820) to Maritime Space Officer (1870). He is the first Naval Officer to complete the U.S. Army Space Operations Officer Qualification program earning the Army FA-40 designation.
At sea, he first served with Carrier Strike Group THREE (CCSG-3) embarked on the USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74) homeported Bremerton, WA. As the N6 Department ALPO, C5I Watch Officer, and Deputy Knowledge Manager, he deployed in 2007, 2009, and 2011 in support of OPERATIONS ENDURING FREEDOM, IRAQI FREEDOM, and NEW DAWN. His next operational tour was aboard SEAL Team THREE (ST-3) garrisoned in Coronado, CA. While at ST-3, he deployed in 2015 and 2017 in support of OPERATION INHERENT RESOLVE as the Special Operations Task Force – Iraq (SOTF-I) J6 Deputy. Following commissioning, he reported to USS Boxer (LHD-4) as the Communications Officer and deployed with the Boxer Amphibious Readiness Group (BOXARG) in 2019 to the FIFTH and SEVENTH Fleet AORs.
Ashore, he was assigned to Commander, Naval Special Warfare Command (CNSWC) in 2012, and served as the N68 (Research & Development) advancing the Afloat Forward Staging Base proof of concept. Overseas, from 2020 to 2022, he served as the Task Force THREE (TF-3) J6 Director supporting SOF activities across the Arabian Peninsula in support of OPERATIONS SPARTAN ARROW & SPARTAN SHIELD. Simultaneously, he was dual-hatted as the Naval Special Warfare Group ONE Det. Bahrain (NSWG-1 DET BAH) N6 Dept. Head providing RSO&I to deployed Naval Special Warfare forces.
Personal decorations include the Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal (6), Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal (6), Army Achievement Medal (1), Good Conduct Medal (3), Humanitarian Service Medal (1), and various campaign, unit, and service awards. He is a recipient of the 2014 Bryan Laswell Award for Fleet Technical Innovation and nominated as SOCOM Communicator of the Year in 2015.
LT Tran is currently assigned as a Mission Commander to the Navy SATCOM Adversary Team embedded with the 527th Space Aggressor Squadron garrisoned out of Schriever Space Force Base. He is married to Mr. William Tran of Seattle, WA and they currently reside in Colorado Springs, CO.
